The specific content of groups will vary depending upon the contributions of participants, but the following are among the general topics that are likely to be addressed:

  • Disease concept of addiction
  • 12-Step recovery process
  • Anxiety symptoms and strategies to cope

  • Relationships and boundaries
  • Relapse prevention

Individual therapy: One-on-one sessions between an participant and his or her primary counselor or therapist may be scheduled on an as-needed basis at our outpatient rehab center in New Castle. Individual therapy sessions may be called for when a participant needs to process a success, setback, or other issue that may be particularly difficult or inappropriate to discuss during a group therapy session.

Family therapy: Participants at White Deer Run of New Castle may schedule family therapy sessions on an as-needed basis. In cases where such sessions are desired by the participant and determined to be necessary to promote continued recovery, family therapy will involve the participant, his or her invited family members, and one of our counselors or therapists. Family therapy offers many benefits, including improved intrafamilial communication and an enhanced ability for family members to serve as positive sources of support for their loved one.

Treatment methods and models: At our outpatient rehab center we incorporate a variety of treatment methods and models to ensure the most dynamic and responsive experience for all who receive care at our center. The following are among the methods and models that may be employed during an individual’s time in rehab:

  • 12-Step Recovery Model: First developed in the 1930s as a means of overcoming alcoholism, the 12-step model is an effective step-by-step process of recovery that has been adapted to help individuals who are suffering from a variety of addictions and behavioral compulsions.
  • Client-Centered Supportive Therapy – In this model, the therapist creates an atmosphere of acceptance and understanding, and he or she encourages the participant to become less defensive and more open to personal exploration and meaningful change.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) — CBT is a popular and effective form of psychotherapy in which counselors and participants focus on changing cognitive processes, such as thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes, in order to solve a problem or accomplish a goal.
  • Disease Concept Model: Treatment at White Deer Run of New Castle is based upon the belief that addiction is a progressive, deteriorating, chronic disease with genetic, neurological, biological, and environmental sources of origin.
  • Ego-Psychology Model: The relationship between counselor and participant is an important element of this model, which is based upon the belief that a strong sense of self will enable individuals to resist the urge to relapse into patterns of substance abuse.
  • Family Interaction Model – This therapeutic model is particularly effective when working with couples and families, and in instances involving codependency and related issues.
  • Motivational Interviewing: This therapeutic approach is a non-judgmental and non-confrontational technique with the goals of engaging clients in the process of increasing motivation and eliciting change.
  • Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT) – In REBT, participants are taught to emphasize the present, and to examine and challenge unproductive thought patterns that lead to self-defeating behaviors.
  • Reality Therapy — This form of therapy focuses on responsible behaviors and emphasizes conscious value judgments and an understanding of natural consequences.
